Arlene Ruth Shields

Mrs. Arlene Ruth (Hann,Washburn) Shields, 82, of Colebrook, New Hampshire, and Deltona, Florida, passed away Thursday, April 27, 2006, in Deltona. Mrs. Shields was born September 1, 1923, in Hereford, P.Q., Canada, daughter of the late George and Abbiegail (Wheeler) Hann. She spent her childhood on Hall Stream, and moved to Route 3 in Pittsburg with the marriage to William Washburn. After his death, she married John Shields and they traveled to Old Town, ME, and they moved back to Pittsburg to run Wander Inn, and most recently she has wintered in Deltona, FL, and summered in Colebrook, NH. She was a great proponent of education. She made sure that all of her children received a college education and she received her college degree 40 years after her high school graduation. She taught 2nd grade at the Pittsburg School for a number of years and was school Librarian. She very much enjoyed seeing her former students progress through life. She loved to do quilting and has made several blankets for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchild and other family members as well as others in the community. She was an active member of the Pittsburg snowmobile club. Mrs. Shields is survived by three sons, Kent Washburn of San Antonio, TX, Brent Washburn of Concord, NH, and Larry Shields of Gilmanton, NH; a step-daughter, Norma Schulein of New York City, NY; a brother, Kenneth Hann of Canaan, VT; four grandchildren, Sarah Russo of Gorham, ME, Sandra Washburn of Montigue, MA, Christopher and Patrick Shields of Gilmanton, NH; and a great-grandson, Evan Russo of Gorham, ME. Mrs. Shields is predeceased by her parents; her loving husbands, William H. Washburn and John M. Shields; a son, Barry A. Washburn; a step-son, James Shields; a grandson, William B. Washburn; and a brother, Stanley “Bill” Hann. At Mrs. Shields’ request, calling hours will be private. A graveside service will be conducted on Monday, May 8th at 1:00 p.m. at the Indian Stream Cemetery in Pittsburg.
