Hermance F. Paige

CANAAN – Hermance F. Paige, 93, of Canaan, passed away at her home on Tuesday evening, May 10, 2022. She was born in St. Malo, Quebec, on May 7, 1929, the daughter of Francois and Blanche (Hebert) Crete. She emigrated to the U.S. at the age of 12 with her family, and attended schools in Beecher Falls and Island Pond, Vt. In 1951, she was married to William C. Paige in Norton. For many years, they lived in Canaan, and in 1968, they moved to Lake Wallace where they owned and operated Poutre’s Motel. In 1972, they purchased the Spa Restaurant and operated that for seven years. After leaving the hospitality business, Hermance worked in the dietary department at the Coos County Nursing Hospital for the next 17 years, from which she retired. Hermance loved to play cards and Bingo, and she was a talented blanket maker. It was known in the family that she was the best-dressed dishwasher at the Rainbow Grille on many occasions. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She truly loved being a caretaker for her elderly friends and neighbors, and spent much time with her many friends. She was a life-long and faithful communicant of Assumption Church in Canaan and St. Albert’s in West Stewartstown. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Canaan and the Catholic Women’s Club. Hermance is survived by her five children: Carol Ann Alward of Pittsburg, Robert (Cathy) Paige of W. Stewartstown, Linda (David) Caron of Canaan, William “Clark” (Jolene) Paige of Virginia, and Sunshine (Ti-nomme) Marchand of Canaan; two brothers: Adrian Crete of Hudson, N.H., and Roger (Dora) Crete of Connecticut; two sisters: Cecile (Tom) Salonia of Rhode Island and Yolande (David) Wheeler of Concord, N.H.; six grandchildren: Dianne Alward, Jillian (Brian) Bulzacchelli, Jonathan (Cecily) Marchand, Paige (Anthony) Blais, Shelley Lapoint, and Faith Beloin; four step-grandchildren: Philip Rondeau, Zachary Couture, Natasha Peterson and Brett Beloin; nine great-grandchildren: Derrec Alward, Jesse Theriault, Cayden and Oliver Bulzacchelli, Adalynn and Koal Marchand, Charles and Vivian Blais, and Ty Buzacchelli; three great-great grandchildren, Willow Rose Alward, Noah and Kingston Peterson; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She is preceded in death by her husband, William, on her birthday in 1983; an infant son, Thomas; six brothers: Edgar, Lee, Paul, Gilles, Robert and Gauthier Crete; a grandson, Travis Paige; and her sister-in-law, Pauline Earle. Calling hours will be held on Monday, May 16, 2022, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Jenkins & Newman Funeral Home in Colebrook. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said the next morning, Tuesday, May 17, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Albert’s Catholic Church in W. Stewartstown. Burial will immediately follow in the Alice Hunt Cemetery in Canaan. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Mrs. Paige may be made to the North American Martyrs’ Parish, for the benefit of St. Albert’s Church, 55 Pleasant St., Colebrook, NH 03576.
