Sally A. Foss

COLUMBIA, NH—Mrs. Sally A. Foss (nee Ellison), 90, of Columbia, NH, passed away peacefully at the Coös County Nursing Hospital in West Stewartstown, NH, on Saturday evening, Feb. 2, 2013. She was born in Hartford, Conn., on Feb. 24, 1922, a daughter to the late Joseph and Jenny (Johanson) Ellison. After graduation from West High School in Rochester, NY, in 1940, and Jackson College (Tufts University) in 1944, Sally married Frederic Foss in Red Bank, NJ, where Fred was stationed as an officer in the US Army prior to being deployed to the Pacific theater during WWII. Sally had the distinction of being the first female school board member for Harpursville Central School District, Harpursville, NY, in the 1950s; the first female grand juror in Madison County, Ala., and an active member of the newly formed League of Women’s Voters in Huntsville, Ala., in the 1960s which gave her the opportunity to meet the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Sr. She moved to NH in 1973 permanently after having lived in several states while following her husband’s career. Sally was a superb seamstress, enjoyed cooking, golfing, skiing, and playing bridge. She was a member of the Monadnock Congregational Church for over 38 years and was known for her Christmas cookies at the annual church Christmas bazaar. She is survived by her son, Gary Foss, of Columbia, NH; and daughters, Carolyn (Phil) Foss- Monson of Columbia, and Betsy (Chuck ) Foss of Rochester, NY; grandsons, Tucker (Sabrina) Foss-Stockwell of Honolulu, HI, and Gene Gant of Montgomery, Ala.; nephew David Foss of Philadelphia, Penn.; and 2nd cousins Jon Anderson and Jane Anderson of Pawtucket, RI. Sally was predeceased by her husband Frederic Foss in 2007; a sister, Betty Young; and nephews Daniel Foss and David Young. There will be no public calling hours. A memorial service will be held on what would have been Sally’s 91st birthday, Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. at the Monadnock Congregational Church in Colebrook, NH, with The Rev. Rebecca Larson officiating. An interment service will occur at a later date in the Colebrook Village Cemetery. The family wishes to acknowledge their deep appreciation to the staff on the 3rd floor of the Coös County Nursing Hospital in West Stewartstown, for the dedicated and loving care shown to Sally during her stay.
