William A. Lovering

Mr. William A. Lovering, 69, of Canaan, Vermont, passed away early Friday morning, August 11, 2006, at the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in White River Junction, Vermont. Mr. Lovering was born October 8, 1936, in St. Albans, VT, son of the late Lewis R. and Vivian M. (Rooney) Lovering. Mr. Lovering graduated from Canaan Memorial High School in 1954, and from Lyndon State College in 1958, with a degree in education. He taught at several schools including Guilford, VT, Pittsburg, Stewartstown Hollow and Colebrook, and also worked as a substitute teacher in area schools. He taught special education in southern New Hampshire, and served as an alcohol and drug counselor for Seminole Point in Sunapee, NH. He served honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam and also serving in Korea and Germany. He worked at the BALSAMS Panorama Golf Course during the summer and for the Wilderness Ski Area as a ski patrolman during the winter. He was a 30 year member of the National Ski Patrol, and a life member of the V.F.W. and member of the D.A.V. Mr. Lovering is survived by a sister, Mary Lou Lovering of Canaan, VT; a brother, Patrick O’Brien and wife, Mary Pat McGrath, of Newbern, NC; a special cousin, Robert Payeur and wife, Sharon, of Waterford, VT; 11 nieces and nephews, Michael O’Brien, Susan Dively, Patricia Baron, Edward O’Brien, Catherine Cooper, Nancy Jones, Phyllis O’Brien, Christopher Doyle, Kevin Doyle, Anthony Doyle and Karen Doyle Culhane; 23 great nieces and nephews; two great-great nieces; and several cousins. Mr. Lovering is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Mahlon O’Brien; and two sisters, Ellen Lovering Doyle and Eileen Lovering McCollum. Calling hours will be held on Monday, August 14, 2006, from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at the Jenkins & Newman Funeral Home in Colebrook, NH. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 15th at 11:00 a.m. at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Canaan, VT, with The Reverend Craig Cheney as celebrant. An interment service will held at the Canaan Village Cemetery with military honors to follow. Expressions of sympathy in Mr. Lovering’s memory may be made to the Canaan School District, Athletic Activities, Canaan High School, Canaan, VT 05903, or to the American Leprosy Missions, 1 ALM Way, Greenville, SC 29601 in recognition of his special nephew who is President and CEO of the organization.
