Zella M. Kenney

COLEBROOK, NH— Mrs. Zella Mae Kenney, 88, of Colebrook, passed away on Wednesday, March 7, 2012, at the Coös County Nursing Hospital in West Stewartstown, NH, after a long period of failing health, and with members of her family by her side. She was born in Colebrook on January 8, 1924, a daughter to the late William W. and Lila (Pond) Crawford. She attended school in Colebrook and was a graduate of Colebrook Academy in 1941. From 1941-43, Zella worked at the Colebrook House and from 1943-45 as a waitress at the Legion Restaurant in Colebrook. She married Wilfred Kenney in 1945 and they began to raise a family, first in Stewartstown until 1958, when they moved to East Colebrook on Rt. 26. In 1968, Zella went back to work as the housekeeper for the Redwood Motel, a position she held until the late 1980s. She was also employed by Hick’s Hardware for more than 20 years, where she cleaned the store once a week. Zella was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Colebrook. She leaves behind four sons, George Kenney and wife Pam of Colebrook, NH, Mark Kenney and companion Diane of Colebrook, Almon Kenney of Canaan, Vt., William “Buck” Kenney and wife Lise of Colebrook; three daughters, Donna McAllaster and husband Rod of Stewartstown, NH, Nancy Judd and husband Willie of Pittsburg, NH, and Susan Wilson and husband Mike of Dover, NH; a brother, Kenneth Crawford and wife Freda of Colebrook; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Margaret Crawford of Colebrook; a daughter-in-law, Darlene Kenney of Colebrook; and numerous nieces and nephews. Zella is preceded in death by her husband, Wilfred Kenney in 2000; a son, Earl “Skip” Kenney in 2009; 3 brothers, Almon and William Crawford, and an infant, Hollis; and a sister, Wilma Hodge. At Zella’s specific request, there are no public calling hours. A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 12, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Colebrook. The Rev. Ron Bruce will officiate. An interment service will be held in the spring at the Colebrook Village Cemetery.
