Emily D. Haynes

W. STEWARTSTOWN – Emily D. Haynes, 84, of W. Stewartstown, passed away peacefully early on Tuesday morning, June 30, 2020, surrounded by her family at her son’s home. Emily was born in W. Stewartstown on July 9, 1935, a daughter to the late Linwood and Kathleen (Robinson) Harriman. She attended the local schools and was a life-long resident of the Back Pond Republic on Back Pond Road. The education of Stewartstown’s youth was always very important to Emily and she served her community for 24 years on the Stewartstown School Board. One of her proudest moments during her tenure came with the construction and opening of the present day Stewartstown Community School. She loved to go four-wheeling and take Jeep rides up on “the hill,” the location of the old family farm. She had a green thumb and also loved tending to her vegetable garden and particularly enjoyed picking wildflowers. Collecting old bottles was a hobby during the 70’s, and countless hours were spent by Emily and her children digging through old farm “dumps” in search of them. To supplement the family finances, for decades she made thousands of double-sided Christmas wreaths, some for local businesses, but most for local and out-of-state wholesalers. For many years she was often on the road picking up odds and ends for her father’s farm and for Skip’s garage. She was a wonderful cook, supper was always on the table by 5 PM just as Skip got home from work, and her family will always remember with fondness her wonderful homemade donuts and bread. Local, state and national politics were always a favorite topic to discuss with family and friends, though in recent years she was not thrilled with many of the trends. She had a profound love for her hometown of Stewartstown, the Granite State and our nation. Emily was a Christian by faith, she had a deep and abiding love of Jesus Christ, her Lord and Savior, and the Almighty Father. The memories are countless, but the thread woven through them all was her unrelenting love, care and support for her family. Though she may be gone from us physically, she will forever be with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in sprit. Emily leaves behind her beloved children, Kevin Haynes and wife Paula of Colebrook, Eldon Haynes and wife Diane of W. Stewartstown, Scott Haynes and wife Roxanne of Pittsburg, and Kathleen Adams of Stewartstown; her grandchildren, Jeffrey Haynes, Gregory Haynes, Betsy Gray, Cassandra Atwood and Ashley Haynes; great-grandchildren Mackenzie Gray, Isabella “Bella” Gray, Hannah Haynes and Brody Haynes: and her canine companion, 16-yr. old toy poodle Hershey. She is predeceased by her husband of more than 63 years, Keith “Skip” Haynes in 2016, and a brother, Fremont Harriman. There are no public calling hours. A graveside committal service will be held on Fri., July 3, at 10 a.m. at the Piper Hill Cemetery on Rt. 3 in W. Stewartstown.
