Paul 'Turkey' E. Savage
February 12, 1928 - October 23, 2016
BLOOMFIELD – Paul ‘Turkey’ E. Savage, 88, of Bloomfield, Vt., passed away on Sunday morning, Oct. 23, 2016, in the very same home in which he was born on Feb. 12, 1928, a son to the late Harry E. and Stella (Ramsay) Savage. While growing up in Bloomfield, Paul served as a page in the Vermont legislature while his mother served her state as an elected representative; and he also worked with his father in the family business, H.G. Savage & Son, as a carpenter, building many of the homes in the area. In 1946, Paul joined the U.S. Navy and travelled the world. Following his military service, he returned to the north country and made his home in North Stratford. He married Helen Gowitzhe and together they had two children who survive him, Harry Paul Savage of Venice, Fl., and Cindy Jane Elkins of Pittsburg, NH. For many years, Paul served his community as a school board member in North Stratford. Later in life he helped to build many bridges around the area, and he mentored many young men in the building trades, many of whom have remained his closest and best friends for life. After retiring, he taught his trade to his grandson, Rusty, and did odd small construction jobs for friends and family. Paul enjoyed fishing and hunting with family and friends, and he enjoyed life to the fullest. He made many friends while turkey hunting in Missouri, and he loved to spend time on his front porch visiting with whoever stopped by, telling tall tales (but every one true), inspecting a hunting trophy, or debating politics with his neighbors. Paul was very proud to be a Republican. He would wish to be remembered by his friends with his favorite saying, “Do your thang … it’s all part of life.” In addition to his children, Paul is also survived by his four sisters, Florence Mummy, Faye Young, Barbara Savage, and Bev Kettle; two step-children, Mark Bourdeau and Arlene Wood; 19 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by the mother of his children, Helen G. Savage, and three step-children, Sherry and Ralph Bourdeau, and Patty Wheeler. There are no public calling hours or services scheduled at this time. Condolences may be offered to the family on-line by going to www.jenkinsnewman.com. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Jenkins & Newman Funeral Home in Colebrook.
