Pauline A. Daley

October 24, 1929 - October 14, 2015

WEST STEWARTSTOWN – Pauline A. Daley, 85, of West Stewartstown, succumbed to her battle with Alzheimer’s early on Wednesday morning, Oct. 14, 2015, at the Coös County Nursing Hospital in West Stewartstown, with members of her family by her side. She was born in West Stewartstown on Oct. 24, 1929, a daughter to the late Joseph G. and Laura A. (DuBois) Solomon. She was raised and educated in Canaan and was a 1948 graduate of Canaan Memorial High School, which became the alma mater of her three sons and five grandchildren. Following high school, Polly attended cosmetology school in Boston. On June 23, 1951, Polly married Bernard J Daley in a double wedding ceremony alongside her brother and his bride, Philip Solomon and Ruth Klebe. The deep friendship of this foursome was expressed in shared anniversaries, family holidays, world travels and in joined efforts to help the handicapped in Aruba. Polly, along with her husband, brother and sister-in-law, helped establish “Friends of the Handicapped” which remained in existence for 24 year and raised over $1,000,000. She and Bernard purchased Solomon’s Store from her father in 1959. Operating it since 1969 in its current location, they expanded the family store with the involvement of their sons, Bruce and Mike. In 2014 they celebrated 90 years and three generations of Solomon family grocers being at the heart of their community. Polly has impacted the lives of many through a steadfast focus on her faith, her family, her work and her friends. She cherished her time with family at her camp on Lake Wallace and was a faithful communicant of St. Albert’s Catholic Church. Her energy and passion will be deeply missed. She is survived by her three sons, Bernard ‘Jim’ Daley and Karen Callahan of Portsmouth, NH, Bruce Daley and wife Heidi of Canaan, and Michael Daley of Canaan; five grandchildren, Kyle M. Daley of Canaan, Nicholas J. Daley and wife Kristen of Essex Jct., Vt., Kaitee R. Daley of West Hartford, Conn., Connor J. Daley of Burlington, Vt., and Zachary P. Daley of Marlborough, Mass. Calling hours will be on Friday, Oct. 23, 2015, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Jenkins & Newman Funeral Home in Colebrook. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow the next day, on what would have been her 86th birthday, Sat., Oct. 24, at 11 a.m. at St. Albert’s Catholic Church in West Stewartstown with The Rev. Craig Cheney as celebrant. A graveside committal will immediately follow at the Colebrook Village Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Mrs. Daley may be made to the Canaan Recreation Park, c/o Town of Canaan, P.O. Box 159, Canaan, VT 05903. Condolences may be offered to the family by going to www.jenkinsnewman.com. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Jenkins & Newman Funeral Home, Colebrook, NH.
