Shorey 'Abby' Skidgel

May 13, 1949 - May 19, 2015

CANAAN – Shorey ‘Abby’ Skidgel, 66, of Canaan, passed away at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH, on Tuesday, May 19, 2015, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Caribou, Me., on May 13, 1949, a son of the late Arnold and Jennie (Davenport) Skidgel. He grew up and was educated in northern Maine. Abby was an avid hunter and fisherman, and he adored children. He was a wonderful storyteller and jokester. He cherished time spent with his family and loved to spoil his grandchildren, especially his great-grandson who he called his little “whirlwind.” He is survived by his wife of more than 46 years, Sylvia (Voisine) Skidgel of Canaan; two sons, Scott Skidgel and wife Lisa of Canaan, and Paul Skidgel and wife Mary of West Stewartstown; a daughter, Maryann Skidgel of Canaan; two brothers, Dusty Skidgel of Jay, Vt., and Edward Skidgel of Easton, Me.; seven grandchildren, Dusty Skidgel, Anthony Skidgel, Pvt. Kyle Skidgel, Ashley Skidgel, Holly Maroney, Angel Dion, and Amanda Heald; one great-grandson, Christian ‘Whirlwind’ Barr; as well as nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be on Tuesday, May 26, 2015, from 10 a.m. to Noon at the Jenkins & Newman Funeral Home in Colebrook. A graveside service and interment will immediately follow at the Canaan Village Cemetery at 12:30 p.m. with The Rev. Craig Cheney officiating. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in memory of Mr. Skidgel may be made to VT/NH region of the American Red Cross, 29 Mansfield Ave., Burlington, VT 05401; or online at www.redcross.org/nhvt. Condolences may be offered to the family on-line by going to www.jenkinsnewman.com. Funeral arrangements in NH are under the direction of Jenkins & Newman Funeral Home in Colebrook.
