Raymond J. Maurais Sr.

CANAAN – Raymond J. Maurais, Sr., 88, of Canaan, passed away at his home on Saturday evening, Feb. 1, 2020, surrounded by his family and after a long period of failing health. He was born in East Hereford, Que., on Sept. 8, 1931, a son to the late Adrien and Marie Anna (Paquette) Maurais. He was raised in East Hereford until he was 12 when his family emigrated to Canaan. Raymond was known for being a hard worker for his entire life. He loved working his dairy farm for many years, while also working as a truck driver, and also for a period of time in the sawmill at Ethan Allen. His family will remember him as always on the go, but who also loved to play little pranks on his children. He was a generous spirit, known for helping his neighbors and friends whenever the need arose. He was lucky to have spent 62 years with the love of his life, Aleda, until his last day. He is survived by his wife Aleda (Benoit) Maurais of Canaan; two daughters, Linda Bouchard of Beecher Falls and Brenda Maurais of Colebrook; five sons, Robert Maurais of Laconia, NH, Donald Maurais of Sudbury, Vt., Denis Maurais of Canaan, Roger Maurais of Newport, Vt., and Raymond Maurais, Jr. of Canaan; a brother, Albert Maurais of West Stewartstown; two sisters, Yvette Beloin of West Stewartstown and Annette Boynton of Canaan; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Raymond is predeceased by two brothers, Victor and Rudolph Maurais, and two sisters, Rita Ladd and Edith Marquis. Calling hours will be on Friday morning, Feb. 7, 2020, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Jenkins & Newman Funeral Home in Colebrook, to be immediately followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Albert’s Church in West Stewartstown at 11 a.m. Interment with military honors will be later in the spring in St. Albert’s Cemetery, of which notice will be given.
